    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. This is the last week before April Vacation. When we get back we will be in the homestretch of the year and the days will go by fast.

This week we will be welcoming Odds Bodkin to BHS. Odds Bodkin has been a full time storyteller for more than 40 years. He has performed at the White House and his work has been commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago. He will be performing a portion of Homer’s Odyssey when he visits us.

On Friday, we will be hosting a day of service to give back to the community. Please click the following link to see information from Beth Corkum regarding our Service Day and to sign up for a Service project: BHS Service Day. All students need to complete Community Service hours as part of their graduation requirements.

Have a great week and an enjoyable April Vacation.

    Class of 2025

We would like to share with the entire school community some events coming up in the next couple of months involving our soon-to-be graduates. This document of Senior Events lists many of the things that are planned. If you have questions please reach out to us.

    BHS Prom 2025

The following message was sent to Upperclassmen and their families regarding the prom. Please contact the Class Advisors with any questions: Prom 2025 Message

    Senior Thank-Yous

As part of the graduation ceremony, a slide show will be shown highlighting every graduating senior. Part of that slide show consists of a personal 'thank you' slide from each graduate. The 'thank you' should be 2-4 sentences thanking a person or people that have made an impact on the graduate in some way. You must have submitted your 'thank you' in order to buy prom tickets. Please email your 'thank you' to Linda Edmonds, ledmonds@bownet.org. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Edmonds.

    Cardiac Screening

A couple of weeks ago Beth Corkum sent out a message regarding Who We Play For which provides cardiac screenings for students. Please view her message here and reach out with any questions.

    In the Classroom

This week I would like to talk about an essential group of educators who go into classes to support students. We are very fortunate to have a terrific group of paraeducators who support students individually and in groups. Some of our paraprofessionals work one-on-one with students by helping them develop their independence and life skills. For instance, for students who are working on improving their fine motor skills, sometimes a paraprofessional will instruct them on how to properly utilize tools or equipment in art class or how to prepare food in the FACS classroom. Another example of how our paraprofessionals support students is by attending class with a student and helping to synthesize the material being taught. They do this by working with the classroom teacher to make the material accessible to the student given their individual learning profile. That could look like the adult taking a math problem and helping to break the problem into different steps for the student to then solve. Support in the classroom can also include the paraprofessional looking over a student’s work and helping them edit a document prior to submitting it to their teacher.

Every member of our staff is an educator and serves as a role model to the students who attend BHS and we are so lucky to have paraprofessionals on our staff who are kind, caring, and committed to student success.

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. This week is the annual Bowlympics! We will have a modified schedule each day this coming week to provide students and staff with the opportunity to come together for some games and activities, and time together as a school community. Here are the themes for the week: Dress Themes. The schedule for each day can be found at the bottom of this message. A HUGE thank you goes out to Tabitha Pauley and Peer Outreach for all the work they have put into planning this week. Thank you too for the clubs and club advisors who are hosting events throughout the week.

    Class of 2025

We would like to share with the entire school community some events coming up in the next couple of months involving our soon-to-be graduates. This document of Senior Events lists many of the things that are planned. If you have questions please reach out to us.

    FIRST Robotics

I'm excited to share that our FIRST Robotics Competition team competed this past weekend at the New England District Championships and delivered an outstanding performance!

They finished the qualification matches ranked 7th overall and earned the position of 5th Alliance Captain. Working alongside two other selected teams, they advanced to the third round of playoffs. Their strong showing placed them 38th in all of New England—an incredible achievement—and officially qualified them for the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas next week. Congratulations!

    BHS Care Closet

Bow High School has resources available for students and families. In the library there are shelves which house food items and clothing items (including Falcon gear) for anyone who needs them. Please reach out to us at the school if you have any questions.

    Cardiac Screening

This week Beth Corkum sent out a message regarding Who We Play For which provides cardiac screenings for students. Please view her message here and reach out with any questions.

    Reminder of Expectations

We would like to remind everyone that school rules are in effect at all school events through the end of the school year. As we shared with Senior parents back in early February, the school does not condone or approve of any “pranks”. In previous years there has been damage caused to the building and grounds and it sets a bad tone to end the year. We ask the school community’s support in upholding this expectation so that the end of the year can rightfully be focused on the accomplishments of our students. Thank you.

Information about the BHS Day of Service

Please click the following link to see information from Beth Corkum regarding our Service Day coming up on April 25th: BHS Service Day

    Safe Driving

Over the past week you may have noticed a larger police presence at dismissal time. This is a result of unsafe driving that has been occurring around campus. There have been several complaints made to Bow PD regarding excessive speed and cars driving past school busses with their stop signs out. PLEASE, slow down and be mindful that there is a lot of activity after school. Thank you.

    In the Classroom

Students in Integrated Physical Science (IPS) have been studying the physics of motion. On Thursday, Ms. McKilen’s students worked together to build a “rollercoaster” utilizing different elements of design to move a marble through their construction. This hands-on approach to learning allowed students to visualize the science concepts that they had been studying (and have a little fun too).

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. This week we have a Flex Day on Wednesday. While students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will have the opportunity to meet with teachers for scheduled appointments, Juniors will be taking the New Hampshire State Assessment (the SAT). Juniors, this test is an opportunity for you to challenge yourself and try your best. Families, please prompt your Junior to get a good night’s rest and encourage them to come in prepared to put forth a strong effort.

This coming week we will begin to have our first athletic contests of the Spring season. My fingers are crossed that we have seen the last of snow so we can get out on the fields and compete. Good luck to all of our Falcon athletes!

Another round of congratulations to our musicians who performed in the small ensemble concert this past Wednesday. It was a great evening of music and highlighted the time and dedication of our students.

Lastly, as we approach the end of the year, I encourage students to talk to their families about their academic progress. There are a couple of things that families can do to support their student:

    1. Ask your student to show you their Google Classroom pages so you can see the assignments that are coming up.
    2. Review student progress by looking at Alma or ask your student to log in to Alma to show you their progress
    3. Encourage your student to go to Flex Time (7:30 - 8:15) to meet with their teachers. Flex is available each morning and can be a great time to get assistance on class material. Please see this message from Academic Dean Svea Schreiner about Flex Time opportunities: Letter from Academic Dean

Thank you and have a great week.

    BHS Equestrian

The Bow High School Equestrian Team is having their first show of the season this Saturday at The Tack Shack in Fremont. The show gets underway at 8:15. Good luck riders!

    NHIAA Scholar Athletes

Many of our students were recognized this week as Scholar Athletes. This accomplishment is a testament to a lot of hard work and we are very proud of each of these students. Please look at the list here to see the students recognized.

    Reminder to Seniors

Seniors, we’re excited for prom and want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to attend! As a reminder, all seniors must complete and record their required 20 career hours and 20 community service hours, as part of their graduation requirements. To be eligible to purchase prom tickets, your hours must be complete.

Please record all your hours in SchooLinks if you still need to complete this requirement.

    CRTC Students

We have been asked by CRTC to remind students that they cannot drive to Concord and instead must take school provided transportation. Thank you.

    In the Classroom

Students in Derek DeAngelis and Anne Barnea’s “America in the World” class have begun reading the novel Persepolis. This story is set right before and during the Iranian Revolution and details the changes in culture Iran experienced during that time period. During this unit of study, students will learn about the latter stages of the Cold War that would culminate in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union. “America in the World” is a 10th grade team-taught Humanities course that builds on the content and skills taught in 9th grade.

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. Last week was our district music concert and art show. Kudos to our talented musicians, artists, and their teachers for outstanding work. We have another opportunity to see our students perform this Wednesday for the Small Ensembles concert.  I hope to see you all there!

On April 25th, the day before April vacation, BHS will be hosting a day of service and wellness activities. More information about this day will be forthcoming but we felt it was important for our students to have the opportunity to give back to a community that has been so supportive of the schools. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

It has been my experience that the last two months of school fly by fast. I encourage students to keep up on their school assignments and take advantage of the many opportunities for extra help that are offered. Please reach out any time if you have questions. Have a great week.

    Busses and Driving

Starting Monday students who take the bus to Bow Memorial School will be picked up by the SAU entrance near the Pre-K play space. We are doing this to help with congestion in front of the building.

We are also asking that all drivers who come onto our campus pay attention and not pass a stopped school bus with its stop sign out. In addition to this being for the safety of our students it is also the law.

    Student School Board Reps

Congratulations to freshman Ava Popielarz and sophomore Matthew Mampuzha who were selected to be the student representatives to the school board.

11th Grade College Planning Night Follow Up

    Parking

Spring has just arrived and the snow has been melting all across campus (sort of). The conflict of not being able to park in assigned spots due to snow is quickly ending.  This message is a reminder that students are only allowed to park in their designated parking spots in the student parking lots. Please do not park on the outdoor basketball courts, in visitor spaces, in no parking / lined off spaces or any other area that has not been designated as student parking. If you do not have an assigned parking space, you must park in 1 of 5 parallel spots designated in courts or in the dirt lot.

Message Regarding State Assessments for Juniors (April 9, 2025)

    In the Classroom

Students in Jon Cannon and Joy Dustin’s American Dream class have been learning about World War II and the impact that it had on the homefront. Each class period for the past couple of weeks they have done “culture blasts” where students learned about a different impact the war had on American culture. On Thursday students collaborated in small groups to create a presentation that showed the changes brought on by the war as well as aspects of culture that remained unimpacted. In addition to the content knowledge students gained they also practiced the transferable skills of collaboration, communication, and time management.

    In the Classroom

Bow High School has two outstanding Business teachers who work with our students on developing their understanding of economics and financial literacy. Money Matters, a course that most BHS students take as part of their graduation requirements, invites students to develop budgets, understand the role of credit, and learn the financial vocabulary they need to be knowledgeable consumers.

On April 2, teams from Bow High School, Inter-Lakes High School, Londonderry High School, Newfound Regional High School, Raymond High School, and Winnacunnet High School will compete for the crown of the 2025 FinLit300 State Champion; a competition in which our students will showcase their knowledge and comprehension of economics. Good Luck Bow Finance Falcons!

    Message from the Principal

Hello Everyone. Last week we were lucky to host a world class musician on our stage and this week we have more unique opportunities for BHS students. Wednesday is a Flex Day and this may be one of the most packed days we have had in a while. We will be offering SAT prep with all of our Juniors, we are hosting the Army National Guard’s Mission Day (we are one of only four schools in the country doing this), and teachers will be meeting with their students.

March is “Music in our School’s Month” and we are hosting the Large Group Festival on Saturday. Our band and chorus will both be performing and I have no doubt that it will be a fun, music-filled day. I encourage you to come out and see our own talented musicians as well as musicians from around the state.

I hope you have a great week.

    Flex Day Emails

Over the next couple of days students will receive an email with their appointment times to meet with teachers on Wednesday. Please message me with any questions.

    Alpine Skiing

Our Alpine Skiing Team had a very successful season and I am looking forward to recognizing all of the athletes at our Winter Sports Awards on Monday. One of our students, Madelyn Hebert, was selected to compete for the New Hampshire state team. The NH girls team won their event which brought together teams from as far away as Michigan and Virginia. Congratulations!

    Thank you Bow and Dunbarton

Thank you to the members of the community who participated in the Dunbarton and Bow annual school meetings. It was great to see both current and former students participating in the process.

    Help for Large Group Festival

BHS will be hosting the NHMEA Large Group Music Festival on Saturday, March 22.  This event features high school bands and choirs from across the state, who will be performing pieces for adjudication by a panel of professional judges. We will be hosting 24 performing groups, with over 1000 student participants!

Volunteers and donations are needed to help this festival run smoothly.

Thank you so much for your assistance in making this festival a success!

    Summer Competency Recovery

Summer Competency Recovery, for those who fail a required course, will be June 24th through June 27th.  Recovery will take place in two sessions each day. Session 1 goes from 7:30 - 11:00 (Math). Session 2 goes from 11:30 - 3:00 (Science). Humanities will meet in either Session 1 or 2 depending on who has signed up. Students must attend each day, for the full length of time, to be able to recover their competencies and credit. Failure to be present for the duration makes them ineligible to receive credit and they will be required to repeat the course. Please note that this is a different program from previous years.

To be invited to attend recovery, a student must have earned a 60% or higher in the course. Not meeting this threshold will require retaking the course. Any exceptions to this must be approved by Academic Dean Svea Schreiner.

    In the Classroom

On Thursday I had the opportunity to visit Jacob Ross’ Geometry class. One of the teaching strategies that many of our math teachers are employing is called “Building a Thinking Classroom”. When I visited I saw students up our of their seats at the whiteboard practicing problems. Students worked collaboratively to solve an equation while Mr. Ross was able to walk around the room to check in on student understanding. Next week, he will be showing his students how geometry and what they are learning in the classroom has a practical application in design and construction.

    News from the Nest: 3/9/25

Hello Everyone. Although last week was the first week back from vacation it was a busy one for students and staff. Many of our student-athletes were involved in playoff games, the cast and crew of “Mean Girls” were rehearsing music and choreography, and our robotics teams were gearing up for more competitions to name just a few. This week promises to be just as busy, highlighted by a visit from world renowned pianist Ilya Yakushev at our school meeting on Friday.

Please let me know if you need anything and have a great week.

    Youth Risk Behavior Survey

On Wednesday, March 12th, BHS students will be participating in the New Hampshire Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The YRBS is a survey of students in grades 9 through 12 that assesses priority health-risk behaviors, including (1) behaviors that result in unintentional injuries and violence; (2) tobacco use; (3) alcohol and other drug use; (4) sexual behaviors that could contribute to HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies; (5) unhealthy dietary behaviors; (6) physical inactivity; and (7) risk behavior perception and family support.

According to the state, “the YRBS is an important tool for measuring the health of New Hampshire’s youth. The majority of New Hampshire public high schools have long recognized the value of YRBS data to monitor health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth in our state. This valid, longitudinal data is used to assess the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs and to procure additional funding for issues identified by the survey to best serve youth and communities across the state.”

If you do not want to have your student participate in the survey please have this form returned to their school counselor: YRBS Opt Out. Additionally, if a student starts the survey and decides not to finish it, they can end at any time. This survey is strictly confidential.

    First Robotics Competition

Last weekend, FRC Team 8708 Ov3R1y K0Mp13X from the Dunbarton and Bow Robotics 4-H Club competed in their first event of the season at the Granite State District Competition. They ended the event as the 5th-place alliance—a fantastic achievement!

In addition to their strong performance on the field, the team also impressed the judges, winning the Imagery Award for their outstanding design and team identity.

We are also excited to share that one of our students, Ben Watford, was recognized for leadership and has advanced in the Dean’s List Award process. They will compete at the District Championship for a chance to become a Dean’s List Finalist.

    In the Classroom

One of the quirks of BHS is that the ventilation system in my office connects to the FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) classroom. For the past few days, around 10:45, the smell of warm cookies has been permeating my office. As is my obligation, I promptly walk to the classroom to ensure that everything is okay. This week students have been experimenting with different cookie recipes and the results have been very tasty! In “Introduction to Foods”, taught by Jill Pelletier, students gain hands-on experience in preparing and serving foods using a wide variety of ingredients and cooking methods. In addition to learning a valuable life skill students also applying measuring and math concepts in a practical setting. I am looking forward to future lessons the class will have on cakes and pastries.

March: Music in our Schools Month

The month of March is recognized as “music in our schools month”. Then, on March 26th, BHS hosts the annual district music concert. This is always a great event that showcases our musicians in each school. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming concerts.

    In the Classroom

Prior to February Break, students in Ms. O’Brienhalla and Mrs. Pauley’s American Dream class were studying the rise of fascism in Nazi Germany during the 1930s. Students engaged in note taking and discussion on the steps that were taken to turn Germany from a democracy into a dictatorship. Among the elements that students learned about was how the aftermath of World War I and the effect of the Treaty of Versailles influenced events of the early 30s. As part of this unit of study students will see how the Great Depression impacted both domestic and global events.
